Journal Entry January 1, 1990: Typically Quandary is one of the easier peaks and a good one for winter. For most seasons, the avalance danger is low. Steve Gladbach and his brother, plus a student in Steve's class joined us for our first winter 14er. Only Steve, Terry, and I had snowshoes. This would come back to haunt us. Being chivalrous, Terry kept her snowshoes all day. The four guys would take turns with two sets. Terry, being at least 50 pounds lighter than each of us, probably could have fared better but that thought came after the climb. Ha! Anyhow, Quandary turned into an all day event. The snow softened on the return down the peak. Postholing became the norm. I cherished my time when it was my turn for the snowshoes. (Little did we know how much Steve loved this. He began repeating ALL the 14ers only this time in winter. The energy output compared to summer is immense.)

Journal Entry October 4, 2010: Twenty years later we repeated this peak with Vanessa Moore. It certainly was easier without six feet of snow! The only problem...wind (See picture below.)
