Journal Entry Summer 2023: This incredible mountain tested our ability to do high altitude. We had not been over 16,000' in many years. The beauty of African animals and the people we met made this feel like one of our all time favorites. Day 1: Mt. Kenya National Park and World Heritage Site: On the backpack we saw colobus monkeys, many exotic birds, buffalo, zebras, baboon monkeys, and rock hyrak, similar to our marmot. Trek to Old Moses Camp 6 miles and 2500' elevation gain. Our guide, Wilson, is amazing. He identified vegetation and wildlife. We shared the hut with 40 climbers. Day 2: Old Moses Hut to Shipton Camp 10 miles and 3500' elevation gain. Again we shared the hut with 40 others. Not much sleep. Our food is excellent and exceeds all expectations. Each team has a guide and cook. Day 3: 3 miles to peak and 2700' elevation gain to peak. 3 miles back to camp followed by 10 miles to Old Moses Camp. We left at 3:00 AM and summited by 6:00 AM. We felt the altitude which slowed us down. Overall we felt fine. It was an incredible day as we looked over a good portion of Kenya from the summit. Day 4: We hiked 6 miles and then were greeted by our driver. Back to Nonyuka for beers and cheers!
